Jordan Henderson: Liverpool star's emotional reaction to Klopp's video message

The 2019/20 season was an unforgettable one for Jordan Henderson.

Liverpool‘s inspirational midfielder captained the team to their first ever Premier League title win and he was one of the standout performers throughout the campaign.

Henderson featured in 30 of the Reds’ 38 Premier League games and despite playing a more defensive role in midfield, he still chipped in with four goals and five assists.

The former Sunderland man’s heroic displays in the middle of the park saw him deservedly win the coveted Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year accolade.

It was just reward for a player who’s worked his socks off to reach the very top.

In 2012, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was keen to sell him to Fulham in a deal that would’ve seen Clint Dempsey swap Craven Cottage for Anfield.

But now he’ll go down as one of the Reds’ greatest ever captains and Jurgen Klopp has played a massive role in Henderson’s transformation tale.

Henderson himself knows that better than anyone, which is why he was overcome with emotion when watching a heartfelt video message from his manager after being named Footballer of the Year in 2020.

The Football Football Writers’ Association captured the beautiful moment and you can revisit it below.

Klopp said to his captain: “Hi, my friend.

“One of the big questions in football what makes a proper player. What is more important? Is it talent or is it attitude?

“I think the easy answer is without talent, you are nothing and without attitude you will stay a talent forever.

“So you are the perfect example that it is the mix which makes the difference. Who would have thought that the young fella coming from Sunderland to Liverpool with big dreams would be one day the best player of the Premier League?

“Maybe you dreamt of it but I’m not sure you thought it would happen. I know you are confident enough to have big dreams but now is there moment where everybody saw what a great player you are, what a great personality you are, what great character you have.

“I know the human being behind the player and you would deserve an award for that as well.

“Many congratulations, very well deserved, outstanding achievement, what a year you had, what a career so far you’ve had and the best news.. still a lot to come.

“I wish you a wonderful day, enjoy the moment because you don’t have to play at Newcastle and, again, best player of the Premier League – wow!”

We’re not crying, you are!

After wiping away the tears and composing himself in front of the cameras, Henderson delivered a short, but sweet, message of his own.

“Without the gaffer I wouldn’t be sitting here so to hear that from him means a lot”, the England international said.

“He knows what I’ve been through so that’s why I’m emotional.”
