If Wolverhampton Wanderers are able to tie star midfielder Ruben Neves down to a new contract ‘it’d be huge’ for the club, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 25-year-old has just over two years remaining on his existing deal and has reportedly been attracting interest from some of the Premier League’s top sides in recent months.

What is the latest news involving Neves?

According to The Sun, Wolves were open to the idea of sanctioning Neves’ exit last summer as their owners Fosun were keen to raise funds to overhaul Bruno Lage’s first-team squad.

It was claimed that the Midlands outfit were set to demand £35 million for the Portugal international amid interest from Arsenal, yet he ended up staying put at Molineux.

And speculation over Neves’ future resurfaced during the January transfer window, with The Sun stating that Manchester United were weighing up an offer for the technically gifted ace, whose price tag rose to £40m.

However, Wolves technical director Scott Sellars revealed in a recent interview with Express & Star (via 90min) that the club have opened talks with Neves over a fresh deal in an attempt to ward off the extensive interest.

"We're obviously talking to him, and we all know how much he loves playing for the club,” said Sellars. “We know how much he has settled here, but he is also an ambitious young man.

"As with all players, you try and have an open dialogue with them and their representatives to come to the best scenario for the club and the player.”

What has Jones said about Neves?

Jones confirmed that a new deal is on the table for Neves but believes his future could ultimately could down to ‘whether anyone comes forward with an actual offer’ for him.

He told GiveMeSport: “It’d be huge for them. He is being offered a new deal, but will he sign it? I think ultimately, it's going to come down to whether anyone comes forward with an actual offer for him in the summer.”

Would losing Neves be a big blow?

Neves has been a crucial cog in Wolves’ side since his shock arrival from Porto in 2017, registering 24 goals and 12 assists in 207 appearances across all competitions.

The engine room operator helped the Midlands outfit win the Championship title before securing consecutive seventh-placed finishes and a place in the FA Cup semi-finals.

And his underlying numbers have been equally as impressive. As per FBref, Neves has ranked in the 88th percentile for total shots and passes attempted and the 77th for tackles amongst players in his position over the last year.

Therefore, his departure would surely be a significant blow for Wolves, and everyone associated with the club will surely be hoping h puts pen to paper on fresh terms.
