Suggestions that Tottenham Hotspur are using Jorge Mendes to find them a new striker are ‘wide of the mark’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Spurs are reportedly in the market for a new striker, with Harry Kane’s future up in the air and manager Antonio Conte believed to be keen to add extra cover and competition in the final third.

What is the latest news involving Tottenham?

According to The Athletic, Mendes has been approaching centre-forwards across Europe regarding the possibility of joining Tottenham during the summer transfer window.

The Portuguese super-agent is said to be searching for possible replacements should Kane move to Manchester United when the market reopens for business and has held talks over Benfica’s Darwin Nunez and Roma’s Tammy Abraham.

Kane attracted several bids from Manchester City last summer as they attempted to prise him away from north London but it’s their local rivals who are now tipped to try their luck.

The Athletic state that the Red Devils want to secure the services of the England international ‘regardless of who is charge next season’.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be one of the frontrunners to take up the Old Trafford hot seat, though, and his bond with Kane could prove to be beneficial in United’s attempts to sign him.

What has Jones said about Tottenham?

Spurs have struggled in from of goal somewhat this season, with their tally of 47 Premier League strikes the second-lowest total amongst the top seven clubs.

However, Jones believes the suggestion that the capital club are relying on Mendes to find them additional firepower is slightly mistaken.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think that this suggestion that an agent is finding Tottenham a new striker right now is slightly wide of the mark because Tottenham are distancing themselves from that, and they don't want to be seen as taking that approach.”

Who should Tottenham sign?

If Conte is forced to replace Kane, then it seems as though there are two leading candidates in the frame to do just that.

Nunez has been in fabulous form for Benfica throughout 2021/22, scoring 26 goals and laying on two assists in 33 appearances, including the winning goal in their 2-1 aggregate victory over Ajax in the Champions League last-16.

Meanwhile, Abraham has been a revelation since joining Roma back in August, racking up 27 goal contributions in 40 outings for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Either forward could prove to be an astute acquisition for Tottenham, but keeping hold of Kane will surely be the priority for Conte and co.
