Aston Villa: Update emerges involving Philippe Coutinho and Paul Pogba

Aston Villa will not be able to sign both Philippe Coutinho and Paul Pogba this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Potential moves to Villa Park have been mooted, with the former already there on loan, but Jones doubts the Midlands club can afford to pay both of their contracts.

What is the latest news involving Coutinho and Pogba?

Coutinho arrived at Villa on loan from Barcelona in January and has made an incredible impact. In 10 Premier League appearances, he has already managed to rack up seven goal contributions.

Given that impact, you would expect Villa to try and make his loan move permanent. However, manager Steven Gerrard has warned that it is not a straightforward transfer to do.

“This is not as straightforward as people think,” the Villans boss recently told Birmingham Live and other outlets. “There’s obviously an option [to buy] in place. Barcelona still own the player. Phil’s got to obviously want to be here, in terms of the bigger picture, but he’s enjoying his football.”

As for Pogba, The Sun has claimed that both Villa and Newcastle United are eyeing the Frenchman as his second spell at Manchester United draws closer to an end.

Pogba, who returned to Old Trafford back in 2016 in an £89m deal, is out of contract in the summer and is no closer to putting pen to paper on an extension.

What has Jones said about Coutinho and Pogba to Villa?

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that Villa are not in the position to sign both Coutinho and Pogba on their large contracts.

Speaking to GMS, the transfer insider said: “I don’t feel that Aston Villa are in the situation where they can sign Paul Pogba and Coutinho in the summer to these kind of contracts.”

Who are Villa more likely to sign?

Coutinho. The former Liverpool player, who joined Barcelona for £142m on a £480,000-a-week contract, looks at home at Villa and has a great relationship with Gerrard, who he played alongside during his time at Anfield.

“It’s always nice when you have someone who believes in you and, of course, I believe in me,” Coutinho told Sky Sports in February when talking about his current manager.

The fact that Villa do have that £33m buy option in their loan agreement with Barcelona also makes the Brazilian a more likelier signing than Pogba, who is almost certain to have Europe’s biggest clubs chasing after him once his contract at Old Trafford expires.

Ultimately, Villa are unlikely to end up with both Coutinho and Pogba, but talk of the club trying to sign the two high-profile stars shows how far they have come.
