Odegaard: From child prodigy to Arsenal star

Odegaard, a child prodigy who first made headlines with Norwegian outfit Stromsgodset, was signed by Real Madrid in January 2015.

Many of Europe’s elite clubs were keen to sign Odegaard but it was Los Blancos who won the battle for his signature.

However, his six-year spell with Madrid was frustrating. He was never given a fair crack of the whip at the Bernabeu and was loaned out to Heerenveen, Real Sociedad and Arsenal before joining the Gunners on a permanent deal in 2021.

Odegaard was named Norway captain aged 22

This was the same year that Odegaard was named captain of Norway, aged just 22, taking over from 31-year-old Stale Solbakken.

“He was chosen by me after a review with the support staff and coaches, and then there was a feeling I had after conversations with players. We think Martin has lived a long life already in European football.” Solbakken told reporters, per Just Arsenal.

Odegaard said: “It is big. Being captain of Norway is one of the absolute greatest things you can experience.”

“It’s sad with Stefan giving up. We’ll miss him. He has been a great captain both on and off the field.

“If Stale has chosen me in that role, it is because he feels that I am doing something right. It comes with an extra responsibility both on and off the field. I’m ready to take that.”
