Alphonso Areola's current situation at West Ham is "uncertain", according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The £8.1m-rated goalkeeper is on loan at the Hammers from PSG, but it remains unclear as to where the Frenchman will be playing his football next season.

What's the latest news involving Areola?

Despite Areola making just the solitary Premier League appearance this term, West Ham have an option to sign the stopper this summer.

However, David Moyes' side now face competition for his signature. While the London Stadium outfit are considering a permanent move for Areola, 90min believe that Fulham, where the 29-year-old spent last season, are looking into the possibility of re-signing the former Real Madrid keeper.

Areola might have been overlooked in the league last season, but he has still played 14 times for Moyes' men and started both legs of the Europa League last 16 tie against Sevilla, making a crucial save to deny Youssef En-Nesyri from point-blank range in the first half.

Therefore, Areola should be confident of keeping his place in the side for the quarter final matches against Lyon, even though he's the club's number two behind Lukasz Fabianski.

But Jones reckons that Areola's future at the London Stadium is still very much up in the air heading into the final few months of his loan.

What did Jones say about Areola?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "At this point, they can extend his deal, they can sign him permanently, but it's all very uncertain at the moment."

Do West Ham need Areola?

Areola might be one of four senior goalkeepers at the club, but two of them, Fabianski and Dave Martin, are out of contract, while third choice, Darren Randolph, has just 12 months left on his deal and is unlikely to pose much threat to the Frenchman for the number one spot.

Therefore, heading into the summer window, the Hammers need to sign at least one new keeper, which would surely make Areola the most likely candidate.

Not only has he proven himself in the Premier League with a fine season at Fulham, but he's shown himself as more than capable of performing at West Ham's level, keeping clean sheets in seven of his 14 games for the club, including against both Manchester clubs and Sevilla
