Manchester United supporters would be ‘very happy’ if they signed either Youri Tielemans or Ruben Neves from Leicester City or Wolves, respectively, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements and are expected to make that position a priority when the transfer market reopens for business over the summer.

What is the latest news involving United?

According to The Sun, United were determined to bring Neves to the club during the January transfer window after mulling over a potential bid for him for six months.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick was said to be underwhelmed by the performances of current options Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and Fred since his arrival and looking for a winter upgrade.

However, a formal offer never materialised for Neves, who is reportedly valued at £50m, and he has continued to shine at Molineux since.

But the Portugal international is not the only player on United’s radar. Tielemans’ outstanding displays for Leicester have also reportedly caught the eye of the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed in February that the 24-year-old would not renew his contract with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2023.

Since then, The Sun have claimed that United have identified Tielemans as a cheaper alternative to Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips, although Arsenal are also credited with an interest in his services.

What has Jones said about Tielemans and Neves?

It’s believed that Tielemans, who is believed to be available for around £42m, is eager to play for a side in the Champions League next term.

That means United could be out of the running if they fail to secure a top-four finish, but Jones believes either the Belgium international or Neves would get their fan base excited.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think as a United fan, you'd look at that and be very happy if you're going into a summer knowing that you're signing Tielemans or Neves for your midfield.”

Do United need a new midfielder?

United have arguably been missing a first-choice natural holding midfielder for many years now, with Fred and McTominay both playing slightly out of position to fill the role.

And with the likes of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all potentially leaving on free transfers in a few months’ time, the need for reinforcements in the centre of the pitch will only increase.

The acquisition of either Tielemans or Neves would surely be warmly welcomed by United fans then but only time will tell if the club’s chiefs can get either deal over the line.
