Egypt were left heartbroken as they were defeated by Senegal in their World Cup playoff on Tuesday evening.

The Pharaohs held a narrow one-goal advantage going into the second leg in Senegal.

Senegal immediately drew level four minutes into the match at Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade after Hamdi Fathi put the ball in his own net.

Neither side could find a winner and thus the game was decided by penalties.

And it was Senegal who emerged victorious as Sadio Mane dispatched the winning penalty.

Mohamed Salah was not able to guide his side to their second consecutive World Cup.

The Liverpool superstar fired his spot-kick during the shootout over the bar and looked disappointed as he made his way off the pitch after the game.

Footage has now emerged of him giving an emotional speech to his teammates after the game and he looked like a broken man.

The 29-year-old even hinted that he may be retiring from international football.

He said, per Egyptian outlet Filgoal: "I spoke with the players in the dressing room before the second leg and told them that I am proud to play with them and they are one of the finest people to have played with.

"I have spent some time with the previous generations with Wael Gomaa and AbouTrika as well as the Abdallah El Saeed generation and I am very happy with the current crop.

"Whether or not I am available in the future, I am proud to have been your teammate..."

Salah was then interrupted by Egypt's Sport Minister, Ashraf Sobhi, who said: "You'll be with us."

It seems that Salah may have played his last game in an Egypt shirt.

He's appeared 84 times for Egypt and scored 47 times.

Regardless of whether he continues playing for Egypt or not, he has already established himself as one of their greatest ever players.
