Harry Maguire has endured a season to forget at Manchester United.

The former Leicester City man has been at the hub of a media and fan maelstrom over his underwhelming performances with the famous red devil on his chest.

United have struggled for any sort of tangible consistency this season, and the supposed lack of confidence that Maguire seems to breed among his teammates is being slated as one of the biggest causes.

Maguire may have been hoping for some respite from the fan ire when he pulled on his beloved England shirt during the current international break, but there was no escaping it.

Maguire was booed by a select group of fans at Wembley leading to fierce debate in the aftermath of the Three Lions' friendly with Ivory Coast.

England boss Gareth Southgate came out in in stout defence of the defender while the likes of Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane blasted the the treatment he received.

However, there were some who settled on the other side of the divide, with the likes of Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher calling for Maguire to step and silence the haters.

It all seems such a far cry from the excitement that followed Maguire to Old Trafford when he became the most expensive defender in the world.

Even the above mentioned Keane was in good spirits about the move in the days following the unveiling.

While working on punditry for Sky, Keane was firm in his belief that United had done the right thing - an opinion that was then echoed by Jose Mourinho who was sitting alongside the Irishman.

When asked if the acquisition of Maguire looked like 'money well spent', Keane responded:

"Man United couldn't afford to not sign him, it's as simple as that. He's an English centre-half, he's 26, he's got experience. Man United had to buy him.

"He's better than what they've got. I think he'll be a good player for the club."

Keane, however, still harboured some concerns before Mourinho shared his own thoughts:

"I agree totally with Roy. It's not about one more million or two less million, it's about you need to buy him at that moment.

"If you don't buy Maguire, today you are playing Lindelof and Tuanzebe or Lindelof and Phil Jones but Lindelof and Maguire is a different picture.

"His physical qualities. Lindelof is very very good in some aspects of the game but he can be bullied, he's not especially good in the air and Maguire has that kind of presence and that kind of physicality that is very important."

In other words, Maguire's signing made a lot of sense at the time even among some of the best minds in the game.

So where has it all gone wrong for the English star? More importantly, can he set it right and get back to his best?
