Leeds United are 'in pole position' to welcome Brenden Aaronson to Elland Road when the transfer window reopens, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Jesse Marsch was appointed as the Whites' head coach at the end of February and it appears he could make Red Bull Salzburg star Aaronson his first signing since arriving in Yorkshire.

What's the latest news involving Aaronson?

According to respected German reporter Florian Plettenberg, Leeds are the favourites to win the race for Aaronson's services.

Plettenberg claims Aaronson is eager to leave his current employers in the summer and negotiations with Leeds are ongoing, but the Premier League side could be forced to part with as much as £25million to acquire the 18-cap United States international as there is not a release clause written into his Salzburg contract.

It comes after Leeds failed in their attempts to sign the 21-year-old in January as they saw bids of £15million and £20million turned down amid additional interest from RB Leipzig and AC Milan.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed Premier League rivals could also look to sign Aaronson when the transfer window reopens, meaning the Whites may face stiff competition to seal the creative midfielder's arrival.

Aaronson has previously spoken of his desire to enjoy a stint in the Premier League, with him suggesting it is 'a dream league and something I would like to be a part of for any team'.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Aaronson?

O'Rourke believes Leeds are in the driving seat when it comes to attempting to prise Aaronson away from Austrian giants Salzburg at the end of the season.

However, the journalist warns Marsch must ensure the Whites' top flight status remains intact in order for a deal to go through.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "He's obviously interested in a move to the Premier League.

"Leeds are probably in pole position, right now, to get it done. A lot will depend on Premier League survival."

Why are Leeds still interested despite the dugout change?

According to the Daily Star, Leeds believe Marsch’s strong links to Aaronson could help them to eventually get a deal over the line after their failed efforts during the winter window.

The report suggests Marsch has told chairman Andrea Radrizzani he is a big admirer of Aaronson, leading to him urging the club to push ahead with plans to lure him to Elland Road.

Marsch managed his compatriot while in the Salzburg dugout, with him selecting Aaronson 25 times during his tenure.
