Newcastle United are facing a 'problem' in their bid to offload Miguel Almiron as a limited number of clubs are interested in ending his St James' Park spell, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Eddie Howe was appointed as the Magpies' head coach last November and he could use the summer window as an opportunity to freshen up his squad.

What's the latest news involving Almiron?

According to The Times, Howe is planning a major summer rebuild and Almiron leads a list of seven stars to have been made available for transfer.

The report suggests Dwight Gayle, Jamal Lewis, Isaac Hayden, Ciaran Clark, Emil Krafth and Karl Darlow have joined Almiron in being deemed surplus to requirements.

It has emerged that Newcastle would be open to selling Almiron for as little as £15million due to not featuring in Howe's long-term plans on Tyneside.

Almiron made the move to St James' Park more than three years ago, with a £21million fee seeing him surpass Michael Owen as the most expensive arrival in the club's history.

The creative midfielder's £74,000-per-week contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2024, so Newcastle are in a strong negotiating position if suitors come forward when the transfer window reopens.

What has Dean Jones said about Almiron?

Jones understands Newcastle have struggled to find a potential buyer as they look to get Almiron off their books.

The transfer insider believes there is a distinct possibility that the 43-cap Paraguay international could end up remaining on Tyneside due to there not being a host of options available to him.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "At the moment, there's not been a lot of interest in him, so it's going to be tricky to offload him.

"He wasn't cheap, so that's a slight problem for them."

Why is Almiron surplus to requirements at Newcastle?

Having made the move from Major League Soccer franchise Atlanta United, Almiron has struggled to adjust to the rigours of English football and only registered 18 goal involvements in 115 outings.

The appointment of Howe did not give Almiron a new lease of life either, with him struggling to nail down a regular starting spot under the former Bournemouth chief.

With Newcastle becoming the richest club in world football thanks to the £305million takeover led by the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund last October, Howe will be able to splash the cash and find a replacement in the summer.
