Luis Suarez has been at the centre of many controversies throughout his playing career.

Two have come at World Cups, including his bite on Giorgio Chiellini in 2014 that saw the striker banned from all football-related activities for four months.

Four years before that shocking incident, Suarez secured his status as a pantomime villain to help Uruguay progress to the semi-finals in South Africa.

In a tense quarter-final match against Ghana, the former Liverpool and Barcelona forward prevented the African nation from scoring a winner in the final minute of extra-time with a handball.

Suarez essentially produced a save on the line worthy of a goalkeeper and he was shown a straight red card as a result.

Ghana were also awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan's attempt from 12 yards crashed into the crossbar, which resulted in Suarez going mental on the touchline and sent the game to a shootout.

It was heartbreak for Ghana and Uruguay went on to win the shootout thanks to Sebastian Abreu's ice-cold Panenka.

That outcome meant Suarez was something of a hero among Uruguay fans, as without his illegal intervention, they would have been eliminated.

But pretty much everyone else was livid with the blatant act of cheating and Suarez didn't exactly help matters by going into savage mode in his post-match interview.

Suarez's interview after infamous handball

“The Hand of God now belongs to me,” Suarez was quoted as saying at the time by the Guardian. “Mine is the real Hand Of God.

“I made the best save of the tournament. Sometimes in training I play as a goalkeeper so it was worth it. There was no alternative but for me to do that and when they missed the penalty I thought ‘It is a miracle and we are alive in the tournament’.

“Now we are in the semi-finals although I was very sad because no one likes to be sent off. The celebration afterwards was impressive, but very quiet because nobody gave us a chance but, with courage, we move forward.”

Suarez's interview after the handball itself will no doubt make Ghana even more desperate for revenge when the two teams meet in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup on December 2nd.

Portugal and South Korea are the other two sides that make up Group H, which looks pretty mouthwatering on paper.

November 21st cannot come soon enough!
