Rangers will conduct a ‘fairly substantial’ rebuild of their first-team squad this summer, according to senior Herald Scotland Gers journalist Chris Jack.

The Ibrox outfit have several experienced players approaching the end of their current contracts, while a handful of their established stars only have 15 months left on their existing deals.

What is the latest news involving Rangers?

Allan McGregor, Connor Goldson, Scott Arfield and Steven Davis are set to become free agents over the summer, while Rangers have the option to extend Leon Balogun’s stay by a further year.

But the Glasgow giants’ managing director Stewart Robertson revealed the club have not resigned themselves to losing their ageing stars for nothing just yet.

“Ross Wilson is having talks with all the players whose contracts expire in the summer,” he told Sky Sports (via The Scotsman).

Meanwhile, and perhaps more concerningly, multiple assets who are in their prime years are set to have just 12 months left on their deals following the conclusion of the current campaign.

Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Joe Aribo, all 25, Filip Helander, who is 28 and 30-year-old Ryan Jack are all in the same precarious position, casting major doubts over their long-term futures.

It remains to be seen if they put pen to paper on fresh terms, and manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst could have some huge decisions to make in the next transfer window.

What has Jack said about Rangers?

Winning the Scottish Premiership title this season will guarantee direct entry into the Champions League group stages, meaning a healthy payday for the lucky club.

And Jack has stated how Rangers cannot ‘allow’ multiple players to depart on free transfers or in cut-price deals before stating how winning the league will be crucial to the overhaul that will potentially be needed.

He told GiveMeSport: “It's not something that they can allow to happen. So, come this summer, I think there will be a fairly substantial rebuild of that Rangers squad. And that highlights why the Premiership title is so important.”

Can Rangers retain their title?

Rangers ended Celtic’s monopoly over the SPFL in emphatic fashion last term, but things have not gone to plan this time around.

Their Old Firm derby defeat over the weekend has seen them slip six points behind the Hoops with just six league games remaining.

It will take a dramatic change in fortunes for Rangers to retain their title, and therefore, any rebuild would likely have to be completed without the extra funds provided by Champions League qualification.
