Rangers could seal 'good business' with deals for 513-game duo

Rangers would be conducting ‘good business’ if they managed to agree fresh contracts for Ibrox duo Steven Davis and Scott Arfield, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Gers suffered a major blow in their bid to secure back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles after a 2-1 Old Firm derby defeat allowed arch-rivals Celtic to race six points clear at the top of the standings on Sunday, but it appears the club are looking to make progress behind-the-scenes.

What’s the latest news involving Davis and Arfield?

As things stand, Davis has entered the final stages of his Rangers career as his £13,000-per-week agreement is due to expire in the summer.

During the recent international break, the 130-cap Northern Ireland captain insisted he was relaxed about the contract situation due to negotiations only getting underway at a similar time last year.

Like Davis, Arfield finds himself in a precarious situation as his £16,000-per-week deal is set to reach its climax at the end of May.

The midfielder told BT Sport, via The National, that negotiations were ongoing between Rangers and his representatives in February but it appears a breakthrough has not been made.

Managing director Stewart Robertson previously revealed that Gers sporting director Ross Wilson has been in regular dialogue with stars whose contracts will run out in the coming months.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about Davis and Arfield?

O’Rourke believes Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst should look to ensure Davis and Arfield remain at Ibrox beyond the end of the season.

The journalist feels the Dutchman should not entertain allowing the central midfield duo to leave the Glasgow giants.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it would be good business from Rangers to keep these two players.

“They are two very experienced players in van Bronckhorst’s squad right now as well.”

Why should Rangers keep Davis and Arfield at the club?

The pair have made 513 Rangers appearances between them, with Davis featuring 335 times and Arfield on 178 occasions, so they have an affinity with the club and its supporters.

Although they are coming into the final years of their respective careers, it is clear that Davis and 19-cap Canada international Arfield could still play a key role at Ibrox.

Despite being 37, Davis has still enjoyed 24 outings this season, while 33-year-old Arfield has been called upon even more frequently – 38 times.

Davis and Arfield have also got their hands on silverware during their time on the club’s books, including four Scottish Premiership title wins for the former, so allowing them to depart would end a successful stint for the duo.
