Remember when Wolfsburg defied the odds and beat the mighty Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga?

It's the 2008/2009 season and Wolfsburg had endured a pretty unremarkable first half of the season that saw them in ninth place overall at Christmas. Ralf Rangnick's Hoffenheim were flying high and sat top of the league, whilst Bayern Munich occupied second position having had a few more stutters than usual.

Wolfsburg, though, had one shining light- Edinaldo Batista Libânio, otherwise known as Grafite. The Brazilian striker had led the line impressively throughout the first half of the season and had notched 11 goals.

The Grafite and Dzeko partnership

Despite their rocky start, things after Christmas were a totally different story for Wolfsburg as they railed off 10 victories in a row. Edin Dzeko had come into a rich vein of form and created a deadly strike partnership with Grafite that had seen the two tally up 31 league goals.

By the time they met Bayern on the field in April, the two title protagonists were on identical points. It was a mouth-watering clash, but one team absolutely ran away with it thanks to their potent attacking duo.

Dzeko had seized control of the match for 'the Wolves', scoring a brace to put them 3-1 ahead, but it was Grafite who stole the show.

Grafite's special solo goal

After having just scored his first of the game to increase the advantage to three, Grafite received the ball on the left around 35-yards out and attacked the Bayern right-back Andreas Ottl.

He turned Ottl inside out before darting in-between him and another defender attempting to charge back, the goalkeeper Michael Rensing rushed out to intercept, but then the Brazilian pulled off a stroke of sheer genius.

Acknowledging the overaggressive Rensing, Gratife shifted the ball to the right of the keeper, skipped over him, and then executed an outrageous back-heel that wrong-footed three Bayern players on the line and trickled into the corner.

Sit down boys!

The result catapulted Wolfsburg to the Bundesliga title, with Grafite and Dzeko firing 16 more goals in the last five games. The former finished the season as the league's top scorer with no less than 28 goals, his special solo strike against Bayern being voted as the goal of the season.

Vintage Bundesliga days.
