The dust has settled on what definitely was the most stupendous WrestleMania of all time.
While Roman Reigns stands tall at the top of WWE having become the Undisputed champion, thoughts begin to stir on what will happen at next year’s WrestleMania.
It was confirmed over the weekend that WrestleMania 39 will again be a two-night event and take place from the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles as WrestleMania goes Hollywood.
While nothing is set for LA and with a full twelve months of WWE TV ahead us where anything could happen, GiveMeSport looks ahead at the matches we’d like to see happen at WrestleMania 39.
Roman Reigns vs. The Rock
The obvious one. The theme to WrestleMania 39 is Hollywood and there’s no bigger star in Hollywood right now than Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. It’s a match WWE are desperate to book because it works on so many levels. Not only do you get to cash-in on the most famous and biggest paid movie star on the planet, but you get the added bonus of the family ties to WWE’s biggest star - and new Undisputed Champion - Roman Reigns. The cousin vs. cousin match is the biggest bout WWE can book and would propel Reigns into superstardom, while being the fitting finale to The Great One’s in-ring career. Does it need the championship involved? In theory no, but it’s hard to see anyone beating Roman beforehand, which means Reigns’ title reign could still be going strong in twelve month’s time.
Becky Lynch vs. Ronda Rousey
Most fans were expecting to see this bout in Dallas this weekend, but it’s hard to see WWE waiting any longer for a what is the biggest possible match in the women’s division. Rousey’s loss to Charlotte on Saturday means there’s still gas in the tank between those two and while she’s on a separate brand to Becky it allows space between the rivals to extend into 2023. However, once we see them on the same show and given the snipes Lynch has continued to throw at the former UFC star even in her absence from WWE, it’s a clash that’s begging to be on the WrestleMania 39 card. And we finally get that match from Survivor Series 2018 we all wanted so much.
Bianca Belair vs. Charlotte Flair
It’s two for two on WWE’s biggest stage for The EST of WWE having defeated Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch at back-to-back WrestleMania’s. Belair has made no secret of her desire to pin all the members of the Four Horsewomen, and the only one of that quartet left is The Queen of WWE, Charlotte Flair. It would take some key switching of brands but it’s a big enough bout for both stars and would see Belair put her already impressive WrestleMania record against the equally impressive ‘Mania CV of Flair. A match worthy of the WrestleMania stage.
Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton
Cody has already noted his plans for a world title run in WWE and if they can hold off giving Rhodes the strap until WrestleMania then this is the match, we’d like to see it happen in. In our timeline Randy Orton is back on top of the championship tree in WWE having turned on long-time tag team partner Riddle. Rhodes has been constantly thwarted in a championship bid until his old mentor is finally standing in his way. Calling on their history as part of ‘The Legacy’ Rhodes would turn the tables on its former leader and finally get his main event moment and finally become a world champion in WWE.
Drew McIntyre vs. Tyson Fury
If this doesn’t happen at some heavily rumoured autumn event, then it’s something that’s a possibility for WrestleMania in 2023. Tyson has made no secret of his plan to return to WWE at some point, especially having established himself as boxing’s biggest name on both sides of the Atlantic. He and Drew have had a number of verbal exchanges across social media and it’s a match that has always been on the cards at some point. WrestleMania has been the home for a number of massive crossover moments from the boxing world and Tyson vs. McIntyre, with its dose of Brit vs. Brit added in, should be the next in line on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
Gable Steveson vs. Brock Lesnar
The stock is high in Gable Steveson, in fact it’s very high, and having made his debut at WrestleMania last night, you can bet that that WWE are going to press fast forward on the Olympic Gold Medallist. Something the company similarly did with one Brock Lesnar, so how about a pass the torch type meeting between the two for WrestleMania. You could easily lean into Brock’s former amateur wrestling background and play it up against the achievements of Steveson. Being bold enough to allow their new pet project to beat one of the greatest of all time on their biggest night would be some WrestleMania moment.
Edge vs. Kevin Owens
It’s WrestleMania season and we need another big Owens match, moment, and t-shirt, so what better way than to him part of Edge’s impressive comeback tour. Owen’s has been mentioned by Edge in the past as a name he’d like to work with and it would another showpiece spot from Owens, who’s profile has never been higher in WWE. Personally, I’d like to see KO in babyface mode trying to down whatever band that The Rated R Superstar puts together over the next few months. However, either way it would be another epic clash for both Canadians.
Razor Ramon Intercontinental Championship Ladder Match
There have been a few mentions of this possibility across social media since Scott Hall’s sad passing last month, and it would be great way to breathe new life into the Intercontinental Championship - a belt that hasn’t be defended on a PPV since WrestleMania LAST YEAR. Using Hall’s famous ladder match win at WrestleMania X as the theme, it would add an annual spectacle to the event missing since Money In The Bank was made into a show in its own right. It could also serve as a jumping point for talents earmarked as a big deal, and this one would be Austin Theory’s follow-up to his work with Vince McMahon.
