Usain Bolt is the fastest man in history.

The Jamaican sprinter currently holds some of the most prestigious world records in athletics, including the quickest 100 metres and 200 metres times.

Bolt achieved both those incredible feats at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

The 35-year-old ran the 100 metres in 9.58 seconds and covered 200 metres in just 19.19 seconds.

It looks very unlikely that either of those records will be broken in the coming years, although we've learned the hard way to never say never in sport.

Back in 2020, American sprinter Noah Lyles thought he'd recorded the fastest time ever in the 200-metre dash.

While competing at the 2020 Inspiration Games, which was socially-distanced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Lyles clocked a time of 18.91 seconds.

That would have absolutely obliterated Bolt's world record and the commentators - like everyone else watching - couldn't believe what they were reading on the screen.

"That cannot be right," the commentator said after the conclusion of the race and guess what? It wasn't.

The time itself was correct, but Lyles hadn't covered the full 200 metres. Sadly for him and his team, he'd only run 185 metres because of an almighty blunder by the organisers.

It turns out the American was in the complete wrong lane. He tweeted shortly after the event: “You can’t be playing with my emotions like this... Got me in the wrong lane smh.”

The Olympic Games: How much do you know about the greatest sports show on earth?

Ouch. Imagine thinking you'd changed the athletics game forever with an incredible time, only to have it taken away from you in such devastating fashion.

The 18.91 seconds time raised eyebrows almost immediately, as it was nearly 0.60 seconds faster than Lyles' personal best from the 2019 World Championships in Doha, where he won the gold medal.

Lyles will probably never officially break Bolt's record, but the 24-year-old does at least have time on his side.
