West Ham should have gambled on former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham last summer, claims ex-Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The 24-year-old has been a revelation at AS Roma this season, joining the Italian outfit in a £34m deal after previously being linked with a move to the London Stadium.

What is the latest news involving Abraham?

Amid an incredible campaign under Jose Mourinho, Roma have reportedly slapped a whopping £100m price tag on Abraham's head to ward off interest.

According to the Daily Mail, the England international has caught the attention of some of the Premier League's top clubs with his performances at the Stadio Olimpico, forcing Roma to do the above in a bid to keep hold of their talisman.

In his debut season in Italy, Abraham has scored over 20 goals in all competitions and is on course to reach the 30-goal mark, making it no surprise that other outfits are looking at him.

Prior to joining Mourinho's side, multiple outlets, including the Evening Standard, claimed that Abraham was a target for West Ham. However, manager David Moyes suggested that Chelsea's asking price was too high.

What has Palmer said about Abraham and West Ham?

Palmer, though, feels signing Abraham for £34m was well worth a gamble, especially given the Hammers' lack of options up front.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the former Leeds United and Southampton player said: "Even at the time, I said when he was going for the money he was going for, at his age, they should have taken a gamble on him, £34m. West Ham were desperate for a striker. At his age, it was worth paying that money."

Should West Ham have signed Abraham?

Without a doubt. They quite clearly needed another centre-forward, with Michail Antonio the only natural option in their squad, while Abraham has a very good goalscoring record.

Back in the 2019/20 season, when he was a regular starter for Chelsea, the Roma man scored 15 goals in 34 Premier League appearances to help the Blues qualify for the Champions League.

In West Ham's bid to accomplish the same thing this term, they could have undoubtedly done with that kind of firepower up front.

What makes things even more baffling is the fact that the east London club went on to sign Nikola Vlasic, who has made just five league starts in the current campaign, in a deal worth £34.5m in total. Would that money not have been better spent on Abraham?

Of course, there may have been other factors that went against West Ham, but this does feel like one that got away for the Hammers.
