Newcastle United’s apparent interest in Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin ‘makes a lot of sense’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies are one of several Premier League sides to have been listed as potential suitors for the 25-year-old in recent months as speculation over his future continues to grow.

What is the latest news involving Calvert-Lewin?

According to The Sun, Everton will sell either Calvert-Lewin or fellow forward Richarlison in the summer transfer window to ease their financial woes.

The Goodison Park outfit recorded a staggering loss of £121 million last season, putting them in danger of breaking Financial Fair Play regulations, and the club’s hierarchy are said to have accepted that they need to sell one of their prized assets as a result.

A report in The Telegraph back in October claimed that Calvert-Lewin was ‘on the list’ of Newcastle’s potential targets under their new Saudi Arabian ownership.

It went on to state that the England international is ‘being monitored’ by several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, as he’s ‘highly regarded’ by the recruitment team at St. James’ Park.

And The Sun then revealed that the North-East outfit were in a three-way tussle for Calvert-Lewin’s services in January, with Arsenal and West Ham also keen on making a £60 million move.

The 6 foot 2 ace ended up staying put, though, but it seems his days on Merseyside could be numbered.

What has Jones said about Calvert-Lewin?

Newcastle spent around £90m in the winter window on five new recruits who significantly strengthened Eddie Howe’s first-team squad.

And Jones believes that Calvert-Lewin fits the profile of players who the club’s new owners are now targeting.

He told GiveMeSport: “Newcastle obviously have various lists they're going to be working through in the summer, but we know they like young players, they like British players particularly, and Eddie Howe likes players that he's seen do it already in the Premier League. So, it makes a lot of sense.”

How has Calvert-Lewin been performing?

Calvert-Lewin established himself as one of the most dangerous marksmen in the Premier League between 2019/20 and 2020/21, registered 36 goals and six assists in 80 appearances across all competitions.

Things haven’t gone quite to plan for the striker this time around, however.

After notching a single strike in each of Everton’s opening three Premier League games, taking his tally up to 43 in the competition, injuries and a lack of form have seen Calvert-Lewin fail to find the back of the net since 28th August.

That barren run doesn’t seem to have put Calvert-Lewin’s admirers off, though, and he could be set for a new challenge next term.
