Rangers should tie Ibrox legend Steven Davis down to a new contract as he is 'still a quality performer', according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Davis is enjoying his second spell with the Gers, having returned to Glasgow - initially on loan - from Southampton more than three years ago.

What's the latest news involving Davis?

There is uncertainty over where Davis' long-term future lies as his £13,000-per-week deal is due to expire in the summer.

Davis recently insisted he was relaxed about the situation due to negotiations only getting underway at a similar time last year, when he went on to sign a 12 month contract extension.

Managing director Stewart Robertson has revealed that Gers sporting director Ross Wilson has been in regular dialogue with stars whose contracts will run out in the coming months, suggesting initial talks have already been held with the likes of Davis.

Speaking to BBC Northern Ireland, via the Scottish Sun, the 37-year-old revealed he is solely focused on breaking into Giovanni van Bronckhorst's starting line-up and being able to make an impact during the final weeks of the campaign.

Having taken his tally up to 130 Northern Ireland caps during last month's international break, Davis was an unused substitute as domestic football returned with Rangers suffering a 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals Celtic last weekend.

That setback resulted in the Gers' falling six points behind their cross-city neighbours in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Davis?

O'Rourke believes Davis is deserving of being handed fresh terms by Rangers despite falling down the pecking order.

The journalist feels the Northern Irishman is still capable of causing problems for opponents even though the midfielder has entered the final stages of his career.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "Maybe he's not playing as often as he used to right now but, whether that's down to age or anything else, he is still a quality performer.

"I think he was very key in Rangers' success under Steven Gerrard last season."

Why should Davis remain at Rangers?

There is no getting away from the fact that Davis is a Rangers legend, having racked up 335 appearances and 95 goal contributions.

Davis may hang up his boots in the not-too-distant future, but 24 outings this season and remaining in the Northern Ireland international side demonstrates he still has more to give.

The central midfielder has got his hands on four Scottish Premiership titles - along with a Scottish Cup and two Scottish League Cups - so his winning mentality could prove to be of significant use beyond the current campaign.
