Manchester City will take a slender 1-0 advantage to the Wanda Metropolitano next week.

Pep Guardiola's side were made to work incredibly hard against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, but eventually got the job done in the second half.

A brilliant goal from Kevin De Bruyne - which was expertly created by Phil Foden just 80 seconds after coming on - was enough for a victory that means City now have one foot in the semi-finals.

Of course, a lot can change during the 90 minutes in Madrid, especially when you remember how many top-quality players Atletico possess.

However, if the Spanish champions are to turn things around on their home patch, they'll have to play a completely different game.

At the Etihad Stadium, Atletico's tactics were so defensive it's actually impressive. For much of the game, they were sat in a 5-5-0 formation while City players had the ball, a move that frustrated the hosts for quite some time.

Atletico's 5-5-0 formation vs City

Pretty mad, right? We know Atletico are famous for their pragmatism and it's been key to their success under Diego Simeone, but that's a little bit much.

They didn't even look bothered about attacking for the most part and failed to register a single shot throughout the entirety of the match - which is a truly damning stat.

What's equally as damning is Atletico's heat map from the first half...

Wow. The phrase 'ultra defensive' instantly springs to mind and if anything, that would be an understatement.

Antoine Griezmann and Joao Felix were essentially playing as unorthodox holding midfielders at times, while wing-backs Sime Vrsaljko and Renan Lodi barely crossed the halfway line.

Ederson in the City goal probably had enough spare time to listen to a podcast if he felt like it, such was the lack of attacking threat from Atletico.

But Guardiola will know better than anyone that Los Colchoneros have the ability and quality to swing the tie in their favour next week.
