The benefits of youth academies aren't just felt on the pitch, they're big business for clubs.

In the Premier League especially, where plenty of clubs can afford to finance huge youth academies and fill it with the hottest future prospects, selling homegrown talent can provide a rather lucrative revenue stream.

So, it's no surprise that we've seen clubs place a greater emphasis on growing their youth networks, to the point where it's estimated that there are as many as 3,500 players within Premier League academies alone.

The sheer scale of the operation means that there are now many players across both the UK and Europe that have graduated from their institution and gone on to pastures new, but who's the most valuable today?

Well, at bettingodds.com, they set out to find exactly that. Check out the full list of the most valuable players below: (All player values from Transfermarkt)

Discussion

A list stacked with talent, you can guarantee some clubs will be kicking themselves given what some of their former players have gone on to achieve. Looking at you, Arsenal.

Now worth £63 million, the Gunners let Serge Gnabry slip through their fingers in a measly £4.5 million pound sale to Werder Bremen.

Serge Gnabry

Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho tie for second spot on this list, both with values of £72 million. Although, Aston Villa did get a considerably bigger £100 million pound fee when Manchester City swooped in for Grealish last summer- so, well played you Villians.

Liverpool fans will most likely be mortified to see that their former starlet Raheem Sterling is technically the most valuable Premier League academy graduate in Europe. The Englishman's departure to title rivals Manchester City left a bitter taste in the mouth for many of the club's fanbase, but Sterling hasn't ruled out a return to Merseyside in the future, claiming that he "loves Liverpool."

So, Sterling is the most valuable former academy player from any Premier League club.

Unless, of course, you asked David Moyes, who was quoted recently saying that he believes Declan Rice to be worth "a minimum of £150 million". According to Transfermarkt, he comes in £67.5 million, but close enough David.
