Newcastle will bring in a new striker to go ahead of Callum Wilson in the pecking order this summer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Wilson is coming towards the end of his second season on Tyneside, but injuries have scuppered his progress throughout his time at the club.

What is Wilson's record at Newcastle?

Having been signed by Steve Bruce for £20m in September 2020, Wilson made a positive impact in his debut campaign by scoring 12 league goals in 26 appearances. He did have two separate spells on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, though.

He has had similar fitness problems this term, and he is yet to play in 2022 due to a calf problem that he suffered in late December.

Overall, Wilson has a respectable record of 18 goals in 43 games for the Magpies, but Eddie Howe recently revealed that there is no guarantee the forward will play again this season.

What has Jones said about Newcastle's transfer plans for this summer?

With Wilson's fitness being a regular concern over the last two years, Jones expects Newcastle to bring in someone this summer to replace him as the side's first-choice striker.

He has claimed that the North-East club have already drawn up a shortlist of potential targets, which includes Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Patrick Schick and Darwin Nunez.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “They’ll bring in somebody ahead of him as their go-to guy for goals. And, those three are all on the list.”

Is it time for Newcastle to move on from Wilson?

When he has played, Wilson has hardly put a foot wrong, and he has shown during his time at Newcastle and Bournemouth that he can cut it in the Premier League.

The problem is his injury record. There appear to have been numerous occasions where he is gathering momentum, and then he picks up another muscle issue that rules him out for an extended period.

With the England international now into his thirties, it may be the right time for Newcastle to look to the future, especially if they want to start climbing the table next season.

Wilson could still be a decent back-up option, and perhaps he will have a better chance of staying fit if he is limited to cameo appearances rather than playing full matches on a regular basis.

His quality should not be questioned, but his injuries make him unreliable, and that is why Newcastle cannot enter next season with him as their first-choice forward.
