Transfer insider Dean Jones has not heard anything about Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard potentially joining Everton this summer and thinks a move is unlikely.

The 29-year-old has been linked with a switch to Goodison Park, but Jones has his doubts.

What is the latest news involving Vestergaard?

Football Insider recently claimed that Everton are plotting a summer swoop for Vestergaard as they look to bolster their defence.

According to the same outlet, the Merseyside club sent a scout to go and watch the Denmark star while he was on international duty with Kasper Hjulmand's side last month.

Vestergaard only joined Leicester last year after arriving from Southampton in a £15m deal, but the 6 ft 6 centre-half has not got too much game time at the King Power.

In total, he has made just six starts in the Premier League this season, with manager Brendan Rodgers preferring the likes of Caglar Soyuncu and the now fit again Wesley Fofana.

What has Jones said about Vestergaard?

Vestergaard's lack of minutes this term may see him seek a move away from Leicester before the start of the next campaign. However, Jones does not think Frank Lampard bringing him to Goodison Park is likely.

On the speculation linking the former Southampton man to Everton, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "It's not one that I've heard. He's not one that's been mentioned to me as one that is likely."

Do Everton need to sign a new centre-back?

Yes, so you can understand if the Toffees did make a move for Vestergaard in the summer.

Yerry Mina has struggled with injuries ever since joining from Barcelona, while Michael Keane does have the odd mistake in him and a bit of rashness to his game.

The Englishman was, of course, recently sent off in Everton's 2-1 loss to West Ham after picking up two yellow cards.

Ultimately, with one of the worst defensive records in the English top flight, Everton need reinforcements at the back.

It is a pressing matter and one that could become even more urgent if they go on to lose Ben Godfrey, who could be targeted when the transfer window reopens.

As per the Daily Mirror, Godfrey is on Newcastle United's shortlist ahead of the summer as Eddie Howe looks to address his own defensive concerns. Lose him and Everton will certainly have to dip into the market for a new central defender if that is not already the plan.
