Newcastle United’s transfer budget is 'almost limitless’ ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies became the richest football club in the world following their Saudi-backed takeover last year and have been linked to a whole host of talented stars ever since.

What is the latest news involving Newcastle?

During January, in what was Newcastle’s first window under the new ownership, the St. James’ Park outfit spent around £90 million on five acquisitions.

Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimarães all arrived on permanent deals, while left-back Matt Targett joined in a short-term loan move from Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

However, despite the show of ambition in the winter, The Telegraph recently stated that Newcastle have ruled out making ‘expensive superstar signings’ when the market reopens.

It’s claimed that they are set to have a budget less than the figure spent in January as the club’s hierarchy intends to pursue a pragmatic policy that will give them ‘room for manoeuvre’ under Financial Fair Play regulations (FFP).

Yet that hasn’t stopped several star names reportedly appearing on Newcastle’s radar, and it remains to be seen if Eddie Howe’s charges really do limit their spending.

What has Jones said about Newcastle?

Newcastle’s winter recruits had the desired impact on the pitch, pulling them well clear of the relegation zone and allowing the club’s chiefs to focus their attention on next term.

And Jones believes FFP will be something they think about ‘further along the line’ if an ‘amazing opportunity’ presents itself in the summer.

He told GiveMeSport: “They've always got that ability to land big signings based on the fact that their budget is almost limitless.

“I know people talk about FFP, but to be honest, that's something they'll think about further along the line if an amazing opportunity crops up.”

Who could Newcastle sign?

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are interested in snapping up Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby following an outstanding 18 months for the German outfit.

Since the beginning of 2020/21, the France international has registered 26 goals and 26 assists in 79 appearances across all competitions, leading to Leverkusen placing a £75m price tag on their prized asset.

The same report also suggests that Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is someone who Howe could target to bolster his forward line, indicating it could be an exciting few months ahead for Newcastle.
