Man Utd: £45m star 'still on Red Devils' list' after 'audition' last summer

Manchester United have kept Villarreal defender Pau Torres ‘on the list’ of potential targets following their interest last summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Red Devils were believed to be weighing up an offer for the 25-year-old before they opted to bring in Raphael Varane last August from Real Madrid instead.

What is the latest news involving Torres?

According to the Manchester Evening News, United view the 2020/21 Europa League final as Torres’ ‘audition’ before they settled on their prime centre-back target.

And despite the Yellow Submarines coming out on top in the showpiece event, the Old Trafford outfit opted against making a move for the Spain international.

However, a recent report from 90min claimed that Torres is ‘back on the radar’ of United after enjoying another outstanding campaign for his boyhood club.

It’s claimed that the 20-time English champions are in the market for a new central defender, although a final decision on whether they move for one will be made in consultation with the club’s next permanent manager.

United have struggled at the back throughout the current campaign, leaking 42 goals in their 30 Premier League games to date, the joint-highest total amongst the top nine clubs in the division, highlighting their need for further defensive reinforcements.

What has Jones said about Man Utd?

A host of players have been linked to United in recent months, with a sizeable overhaul of the first-team squad expected ahead of next season.

Speculation over Torres has been relatively quiet, though, but Jones has revealed he is someone who the club’s hierarchy have always wanted ‘to be considered’ as they assess potential signings.

He told GiveMeSport: “Pau Torres has always remained on the list, he just hasn’t been as talked about as some others in recent times, but they’ve always wanted him to be considered.”

Would Torres be a good signing?

At present, United are unable to call upon the services of a natural left-sided centre-back, with all of their current options favouriting their opposite foot.

Torres, who has been described as ‘sensational’, would solve that issue, instantly providing a more balanced feel to the backline in the red half of Manchester, but his underlying numbers indicate he would bring much more than that to the table.

Colin McKee - Man United

Do you know this obscure Manchester United footballer from the 1990s?

As per FBref, the 6 foot 3 ace has ranked in the 99th percentile for dribbles completed, the 92nd for progressive passes and the 91st for progressive carries amongst players in his position over the last year.

Therefore, it’s clear that Torres is extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet, epitomising what it takes to become an elite-level centre-back in the modern era.
