Journalist Dean Jones expects Aston Villa to sign either Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips or Brighton's Yves Bissouma this summer.

The two midfielders have been linked with moves to Villa Park, but Jones would be surprised if Steven Gerrard ended up getting his hands on both.

What is the latest news involving Phillips and Bissouma?

According to The Telegraph, Villa will push to sign Phillips from Leeds in a potential £60m deal when the transfer window reopens.

The same outlet states that Gerrard could also make a move for Bissouma, who he targeted back in January.

As per Sky Sports, Brighton wanted up to £50m for the Mali international as they looked to fend off the interest being shown in him.

Bissouma's contract expires next year, so you suspect that number could be about to drop in a boost to Villa.

But with the Villans now seemingly willing to spend over £50m on a new midfielder, Brighton's original valuation may not be a problem anyway.

What has Jones said about Phillips, Bissouma and Villa?

While Jones can see Villa targeting both Phillips and Bissouma, he expects it to be one or the other for them.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: "I think they'll go for both players, but I only expect them to sign one. I'll be very surprised if they got both of those players through the door."

Who are Villa more likely to sign?

The easier deal here is probably Bissouma. As already mentioned, he is approaching the final year of his contract at the Amex, so Brighton could be forced to sell to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the future.

Phillips, in contrast, will still have another year on his, while the England international signing fresh terms at Elland Road does not seem to be off the table.

The Daily Mail recently reported that he is ready to commit his long-term future to his boyhood club amid interest from Villa and a couple of their Premier League rivals.

It would be a massive setback for Gerrard, with Phillips seemingly the priority right now. But the most important thing is Villa sign someone who can play in front of the back four, be it the Leeds man or Bissouma.

They are light in that area of the pitch and could become even lighter should Douglas Luiz depart. The Brazilian, like Bissouma, will also have just a year to run on his contract in the summer, so his future at Villa Park remains far from certain.

Ultimately, you can see why Gerrard has both Phillips and Bissouma in his sight.
