Leeds United's sought-after midfielder Kalvin Phillips is 'a few weeks away' from deciding whether his long-term future lies at Elland Road, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Phillips has been the subject of interest from various Premier League rivals ahead of the summer window opening for business.

What's the latest news involving Phillips?

Newcastle United could reportedly offer Phillips a contract worth £120,000-per-week after setting their sights on winning the race for the Leeds man's services.

The development comes after The Times claimed Aston Villa are leading the race for the 26-year-old's signature and willing to part with as much as £60million in order to tempt the Whites into selling their prised asset.

The report suggests Steven Gerrard, Villa's head coach, has identified the 19-cap England international as a key target as he looks to upgrade his squad and Phillips is in line to be offered a contract worth in the region of £10million-per-year.

West Ham United became the first club to try their luck when they submitted a £50million bid during the final days of the transfer window.

Although the Hammers' proposal was swiftly turned down, it is understood that the east Londoners' boss David Moyes ‘loves Phillips for his skill and industry’ and has plans to pair him in the heart of midfield with England team-mate Declan Rice.

It was previously reported that Liverpool and Manchester United are also preparing to battle it out for Phillips’ services at the end of the season.

What has Dean Jones said about Phillips?

Jones understands that Phillips has yet to decide on whether he wants to continue his career at Leeds beyond the end of the season.

The transfer insider is not surprised that the Whites academy product is attracting widespread interest ahead of the summer.

He does, however, feel the central midfielder's intentions will be made clear by the end of April.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "As it stands right now, we're still a few weeks away before any sort of decision is made.

"Kalvin Phillips is still waiting on what's happening at Leeds. He wants to know about their plans, he wants to know the exact offer they're going to come back with on a new contract and then we'll see if he becomes available to other clubs."

What is Phillips' current contract situation?

Leeds are in a strong negotiating position if any of Phillips' suitors look to test their resolve in the summer as there is still more than two years remaining on the England star's £38,000-per-week contract.

Whites head coach Jesse Marsch's hopes of keeping Phillips at his boyhood club appear to have been strengthened after the Mirror revealed he has told the hierarchy he is prepared to sign a new deal in the summer.

The report suggests both parties have been keen to agree fresh terms for a prolonged period of time but talks have been held up due to Phillips changing to a new agent at the end of the campaign.
