Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has had a 'reality check' ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers visiting St James' Park tonight, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Magpies will be looking to get back to winning ways and three points would see the Tyneside giants leapfrog Brentford into 14th place in the Premier League standings.

What's the latest news involving Newcastle?

Newcastle will go into battle with Wolves looking to recover from a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

The Magpies were blown away by the hosts in the second half, with Spurs scoring four goals after the break, and Howe accused his side of chasing the game 'far too early'.

Howe was appointed as Newcastle's head coach last November, with his introduction to the St James' Park dugout being one of the first changes made after the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund completed a £305million takeover.

But the convincing loss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was the Magpies' heaviest defeat since Howe took charge.

It now means Wolves' visit to Tyneside comes following three consecutive losses at the hands of Chelsea, Everton and Spurs.

What has Keith Downie said about the situation?

Last October's takeover ended Mike Ashley's 14-year reign, lifting a lot of the doom and gloom surrounding the club.

It also saw Newcastle become the world's richest football club thanks to the Public Investment Fund being worth £320billion.

But Downie believes the defeat at Tottenham has made Howe reassess how far the Magpies have come during the early days of his reign.

Downie told GIVEMESPORT: "I do think he will learn from it. I definitely feel, certainly on Tyneside after speaking to people within the club and supporters, there has been a bit of a reality check on the back of that defeat."

What is the team news for Newcastle ahead of facing Wolves?

Howe has labelled tonight's return to St James' Park as 'massive', but he has revealed he could be without some key men for the encounter with Wolves.

Newcastle are at risk of being without the services of midfielder Joe Willock due to suffering a 'slight knee problem'.

Howe has also claimed the spread of illness within the camp in recent weeks has provided a hindering impact while stepping up preparations for the clash.

A defeat could allow Bruno Lage's Wolves to break into the Premier League's top six, strengthening their bid for European football and emphasising Newcastle are not facing an easy task.
