Mesut Ozil: Remembering his outrageous assist for Arsenal vs Liverpool

Mesut Ozil’s future at Fenerbahce looks uncertain.

The 33-year-old has fallen out with the Turkish club’s hierarchy after being substituted in his last match for the club. After being subbed after 45 minutes, he threw his boots in disgust at manager Ismail Kartal’s decision.

The German was dropped by the club for their next match and hasn’t played since.

Where next for Mesut Ozil?

There doesn’t appear to be a way back.

Now, according to Spanish outlet AS, Fenerbahce have started the process to cancel Ozil’s contract.

So where next for him?

Well, the same report claims that Championship side Hull City, who have a Turkish owner, could be potential suitors. They also name-drop David Beckham’s MLS side, Inter Miami.

But with Ozil’s career at yet another crossroads, we wanted to remember just what an incredible player he once was.

Ozil spent three seasons at Real Madrid before a Β£42.5 million move to Arsenal.

For years, it seemed to be a brilliant signing for the club. He helped the Gunners win three FA Cups while being named Arsenal’s Player of the Season following the 2015/16 campaign.

However, things had soured by the 2019/20 season and he became very much a bit-part figure under Unai Emery.

One of the last appearances he made for Arsenal under Emery was a thrilling 5-5 draw against Liverpool at Anfield in the League Cup. Arsenal ultimately lost on penalties but Ozil treated us to a fantastic performance.

And his assist to make it 4-2 to Arsenal still oozes so much class.

James Milner played a short back pass to Caoimhin Kelleher which Ainsley Maitland-Niles latched on to. He managed to knock the ball past the Liverpool goalkeeper in the path of Ozil who had the fairly easy task of tapping the ball into the empty net from a tight angle.

But that was far too boring for Ozil. Instead, he produced an outrageous backheel to fool Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg for Maitland-Niles to score.

The quick-thinking, the execution, the sheer audacity to pull that off.

It’s moments like this that highlight why Ozil was one of a kind.

Hopefully, Ozil’s future gets resolved soon and he’s back doing what he does best. Creating magical moments on a football pitch.
