Cristiano Ronaldo has released a statement after it was reported he 'smashed a kid's phone' as he left the pitch following Manchester United's defeat to Everton.

Shortly after the final whistle, videos emerged on social media with witnesses claiming Ronaldo had smashed a mobile phone.

While the video was inconclusive, reports soon came out that United were "aware and looking into" the incident.

Then, a woman claiming to be the boy's mother, posted on social media.

Still, there wasn't too much evidence that Ronaldo had, indeed, intentionally smashed a phone.

However, new footage has emerged that certainly doesn't look good for the Portuguese star.

It shows Ronaldo limping off the pitch due to his shin injury clearly looking frustrated with another poor result for his side.

Then, he seems to slam his hand down in anger.

The video doesn't show what he slams his hand down on but the Everton fans in the area look surprised at what had just happened.

Cristiano Ronaldo releases statement

Ronaldo has now released a statement following the incident.

He took to Instagram to apologise for his outburst, writing:

"It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing. Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.

"I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship."

On the pitch, Ronaldo seemed frustrated throughout the 90 minutes as United missed a chance to make up ground on Arsenal and Tottenham in the race for the top-four in the Saturday early kick-off.

While Arsenal lost later in the day, Spurs thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 as they remain in fourth - six points above Ralf Rangnick's side.

No wonder Ronaldo is annoyed...
