Serena Williams has jokingly blamed her sister Venus for keeping her up all night and ruining her sleep schedule.

The Williams sisters are two of tennis’ most iconic figures and have enjoyed some memorable battles against one another over the years.

Away from the court, however, the two have always been extremely close and supported each other through everything.

Their journey to tennis stardom, which saw both overcome adversity, is documented in the biopic King Richard, starring Will Smith as the sisters' father, Richard Williams.

Serena and Venus attended the wedding ceremony of David Beckham’s son, Brooklyn, at the weekend and Serena posted a hilarious Instagram story about her sister at the end of the night.

Serena humorously criticises Venus

After coming back late from the ceremony, Serena uploaded an Instagram story stressing how tired she was and that she planned to go to sleep straight away.

However, six hours later she posted another story and revealed she and Venus had been on a phone call until the early hours of the morning.

The former world number one jokingly criticised her sister, stressing: “My sister is a problem. She had me out all hours of the night. And then, we talk on the phone until 5 AM. I’m like, you know, Olympia [Williams’ daughter] is gonna wake me up at 7 AM. No matter what time I go to bed. Thanks, Venus. You’re going down.”

Judging by the clip, Serena’s threats were clearly meant in jest and it’s heartwarming to see the two sisters still inseparable from each other.

Sister rivalry still going strong

It’s pleasing to see there’s still a healthy rivalry between Serena and Venus, even after more than two decades of competing against each other on the WTA Tour.

Both sisters have been ranked world number one in singles and the two have won more than 100 titles between them.

Venus has seven Grand Slam wins to her name, including five Wimbledon titles, while Serena is a 23-time major champion and remains just one Slam victory away from equalling Margaret Court’s all-time record.

Overall the pair have met 31 times in professional tournaments, with Serena leading the head-to-head 19-12.

Are both sisters on the brink of retirement?

Remarkably, despite both being over 40-years-of-age, neither has officially retired from tennis as of now.

Venus played in a record-breaking 90th Grand Slam at Wimbledon last year but last competed in August 2021 at the Chicago Women’s Open.

The 41-year-old has dropped to 467th in the World Rankings –– her lowest ranking in more than a decade and has not disclosed when she might play again.

Similarly, Serena has barely played recently and last competed at the All-England Club last year.

There have been rumours concerning her potential retirement for a while now but Serena confirmed last week that she plans to play Wimbledon this year if fit enough.

Wimbledon will take place between June 27th and July 10th and fingers crossed we see both Williams sisters in action.
