Tottenham Hotspur would make a 'massive' statement by signing Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez as a strike partner for Harry Kane, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

England captain Kane is the only out-and-out striker currently on Spurs' books, so head coach Antonio Conte may look to bolster his options in that position when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

What's the latest news involving Martinez?

Conte may have been appointed as Tottenham's boss last November, but his previous spell in the Inter Milan dugout means he knows Martinez inside out.

The Italian selected Martinez 97 times during his stint at the San Siro and the frontman repaid his faith by bagging 40 goals.

They also got their hands on the Serie A title during their time together and it appears Conte wants to seal a reunion as, according to Calciomercato - via The Spurs Web - he has ordered managing director Fabio Paratici to tempt Martinez into heading to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The same Italian media outlet has revealed Spurs are preparing to go head-to-head with north London rivals Arsenal in an attempt to secure the 24-year-old's services.

The report suggests Inter would be open to selling Martinez for in the region of £67million, but the reigning Serie A champions have yet to receive a bid for the 37-cap Argentina international.

What has Paul Brown said about Martinez?

Brown is excited about the prospect of Martinez swapping the San Siro for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As Conte oversaw Martinez and Romelu Lukaku creating a formidable partnership at Inter, the journalist believes he may hope to achieve similar success by pairing the Argentinian with Kane.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: "I think being able to sign someone like that would be massive for Spurs. I do think they are looking for someone who can play with Harry Kane rather than just in place of him at times.

"Conte played Martinez and Lukaku together and it was incredibly successful in Italy.

"There's no reason why it couldn't work with him and Kane, although Kane is very different to Lukaku."

Will Spurs be confident in their attempts to sign Martinez?

Spurs will feel as though Martinez's relationship with Conte could give them the upper-hand heading into the transfer window, but that does not mean it will be easy to strike a deal.

That is because Martinez only signed a new five-year contract with Inter last October and the fresh agreement does not include a release clause.

Martinez, who has been described as 'complete' by international team-mate Lionel Messi, is also closing in on 20 goal contributions this season and his current employers would clearly prefer to keep the prolific striker on their books rather than having to seek a big-money replacement ahead of next season.
