Wolverhampton Wanderers are considering Allan Saint-Maximin as a direct replacement for Adama Traore and the Newcastle United winger could head to Molineux 'if they really want him', according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Saint-Maximin has been on the Magpies' books since sealing a £16.5million switch from Nice more than two-and-a-half years ago, but there are question marks over his long-term future at St James' Park.

What's the latest news involving Saint-Maximin?

According to 90min, Newcastle are open to selling Saint-Maximin this summer and Wolves have already expressed an interest ahead of potentially pouncing when the transfer window reopens.

The report suggests the West Midlands side are not the 25-year-old star's only suitors as Everton are also keeping tabs on the situation, but could only make a move if they maintain their Premier League status.

Aston Villa are also among Saint-Maximin's admirers, with Newcastle understood to be willing to listen to offers of £50million.

Magpies head coach Eddie Howe is reportedly concerned by Saint-Maximin's hefty salary demands despite still having more than four years remaining on his current deal at St James' Park.

The lightning-fast wide-man would add plenty of Premier League experience to Wolves' squad, having made 79 appearances in the competition and racked up 23 goal contributions along the way, while former Newcastle and England midfielder Rob Lee has described Saint-Maximin as 'unplayable' thanks to his performances on Tyneside.

What has Dean Jones said about Saint-Maximin?

Jones understands why Wolves boss Bruno Lage has set his sights on signing Saint-Maximin in the summer.

The transfer insider believes a deal could be struck if the Molineux-based outfit look to strengthen their interest.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "I can see why they would consider him as an Adama Traore type of attacker. He's got the pace and the trickery.

"I think they can get him if they really want him."

Why are Wolves looking to replace Traore?

Traore is currently on loan with Barcelona until the end of the season, but the agreement includes an option for the switch to be made permanent for £29million.

However, according to Spanish sources, keeping Traore at the Nou Camp is no longer seen as a priority by the Catalan giants' hierarchy amid financial struggles.

That does not necessarily mean a return to Wolves is on the cards as it could boost Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of luring the winger to north London after they failed in their pursuit of the 26-year-old in the final stages of the January transfer window.
