Rangers could 'make statement' at Ibrox this summer to move ahead of Celtic

Rangers could look to make a “statement” by bringing in a couple of big signings this summer, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.

There is an argument that the Glasgow club need a rebuild amid a disappointing season in the Scottish Premiership.

How have Rangers’ current crop of players performed this term?

There is no denying that Rangers have let their standards slip after that fantastic 2020/21 campaign, where the Gers won their first league title in 10 years.

On their way to the Scottish Premiership crown, Steven Gerrard’s men managed to pick up an incredible 102 points and avoid defeat in the 38 games that they played. Maintaining that level was always going to be difficult.

However, falling behind Celtic this season and allowing Ange Postecoglou’s side to open up a six-point gap at the top of the table will come as a huge disappointment having finished so far ahead of their rivals last term.

Considering that, Giovanni van Bronckhorst will surely want to do business in the summer and bring in some players who can help turn the tide in Glasgow again.

What has Jones said about Rangers’ summer plans?

Jones is now expecting Rangers to make a statement in the summer transfer window and thinks that could be the difference between success and failure for the Gers heading into the 2022/23 season.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the football journalist said: “I think the most interesting thing is going to be how Rangers go into this next transfer window because I’ve got a feeling that they might make a statement with a couple of signings. To be honest, that’s all it takes to get back ahead of Celtic.”

Do Rangers have to make high-profile signings in the next transfer window?

Not necessarily. In January, they brought Juventus and Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey and Manchester United youngster Amad Diallo to Ibrox, and neither player has managed to make too much of an impact.

Ramsey did, of course, score in Rangers’ 2-1 league defeat to Celtic, but it was only his second goal for the club since joining and just his second league start.

Which team has won the most Europa League titles since its format changed in 2009?

As for Diallo, he has not been able to build on that impressive debut against Ross County, where he managed to find the back of the net. The Ivory Coast international has often been overlooked by Van Bronckhorst in what is turning out to be a lacklustre loan spell.

Given how this season has gone, Rangers definitely need to bring in some reinforcements for the 2022/23 campaign. But signing the biggest names they can may not be the way to go.
