Everton 'could have a rethink' over 20-cap ace set to leave Goodison Park

Everton may consider handing Fabian Delph a new contract after his impressive display against Manchester United last Saturday, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Delph had not played for the Toffees since December due to a hamstring problem, but he was thrown into the starting line-up for their clash with Ralf Rangnick’s side as Everton picked up a crucial three points.

What happened against Man United?

Having made the bench for Everton’s trip to Burnley three days earlier, it appeared clear that Delph’s condition was improving.

It was still somewhat of a shock to see him start last weekend, though, after such a lengthy lay-off.

Frank Lampard’s gamble to pick Delph paid off as the experienced midfielder delivered an eye-catching performance.

According to WhoScored, Delph’s passing accuracy (80%) was the highest figure out of Everton’s starting XI, while he also made six clearances – only Ben Godfrey (13) made more for the Merseyside club.

Everton managed to seal a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park, with Anthony Gordon’s deflected strike proving the difference between the two teams.

What has O’Rourke said about Delph’s Everton future?

Delph is out of contract in June, and O’Rourke thinks he was heading towards the exit door prior to his performance against United.

Now he believes Delph could still earn himself a new deal, although he has admitted that time is running out for the 20-cap international to convince the club’s hierarchy that he deserves to stay.

When asked if Everton may be considering offering Delph fresh terms to remain at the club, O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “Potentially, it could maybe have Everton have a rethink on what they’re going to do with Fabian Delph.

“I think before that game, many people would have expected Delph to leave on a free transfer when his contract is up, but he came in from the cold against Manchester United and performed really well in that midfield role.

“For Everton right now, he’s obviously out of contract. He’s not getting any younger either, so, it’s going to be hard for him to turn things around and get a new deal at Goodison Park.”

Should Everton offer Delph a new contract?

Delph’s time at Everton has been largely forgetful as he has made just 37 appearances in all competitions since arriving in 2019 from Manchester City.

He is also one of the team’s highest earners on £80,000-a-week, which is a significant amount of money for a club battling relegation.

If Everton drop down into the Championship, it seems very likely that they would have to get Delph off their wage bill.

However, if he can finish the season strongly and play a significant role in Everton staying up, it could be a wise move for the Toffees to keep Delph at the club on a short-term contract due to the experience and quality that he offers.
