Celtic’s hierarchy ‘will be looking’ at the possibility of extending the contract of attacking midfielder Tom Rogic, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 29-year-old has entered the final 15 months of his existing contract at Parkhead but has been tipped to be offered a new deal after enjoying a revival under compatriot Ange Postecoglou.

What is the latest news involving Rogic?

It seemed as though Rogic’s Celtic career was over last season when the club accepted a £4 million offer for him from Qatar only for the player to reject the move.

Under the tutelage of Postecoglou, though, the 51-cap Australia international has been one of the Hoops’ standout performers of the current campaign, registering six goals and six assists in his 27 top-flight appearances.

However, the Celtic manager revealed back in February that negotiations over extending Rogic’s stay in Glasgow had not begun despite his improved form.

"No, it's the last thing on my mind, mate,” Postecoglou said when quizzed over the possibility of extension talks.

"We want people here who are happy to be here and want to be a part of it. Unless someone knocks on my door and says they want to go, I'll just let it roll."

Yet former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has claimed that offering fresh terms to Rogic will be a ‘high priority’ for Celtic in an interview with Football Insider.

What has O’Rourke said about Rogic?

Celtic are currently sitting six points clear of local rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, and Rogic’s 12 goal contributions make him one of the league leaders’ most productive stars.

Therefore, O’Rourke is ‘sure’ that the club’s ‘powerbrokers’ will be planning on making a proposal to the 6 foot 2 ace regarding a new contract.

He told GiveMeSport: “I'm sure, behind the scenes, Celtic’s powerbrokers will be looking at Rogic’s contract again. He's out of contract in 2023, so he’s not got that long left on his current deal.”

How important is Rogic?

Rogic bagged the equaliser in the recent Old Firm victory at Ibrox, and his underlying numbers have been just as impressive.

As per WhoScored, the creative talent has averaged 1.5 key passes, 1.9 dribbles and 0.1 through balls per league this season, placing him in the top five for each metric when compared to his teammates.

Keeping Rogic at Celtic Park beyond his current deal may be high up on Postecoglou’s wish list, therefore, but only time will tell if an agreement can be reached.
