It wasn't Geoffrey Kondogbia's night at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday evening - and not just because the Atletico Madrid midfielder saw his side's Champions League campaign ended by Manchester City.

An ill-tempered affair in the Spanish capital descended into chaos in stoppage time when a 20-man brawl broke out after Felipe poleaxed Phil Foden with an unnecessarily rash challenge in stoppage time.

The aftermath saw referee Daniel Siebert issue a flurry of yellow cards, including a second of the night to Felipe who was subsequently given his marching orders.

However, prior to that flashpoint, there was still plenty of niggle between the two sides - and nearly every time Siebert blew his whistle he was besieged with protests.

Needing a goal to level the tie, Diego Simeone's men grew increasingly desperate as the match entered its final ten minutes.

When the official refused to book a City player in the 85th-minute, he was surrounded by a trio of Atletico players baying for a card.

Stefan Savic and Reinildo Mandava both rushed towards Siebert to argue their case, but it was their colleague Kondogbia who would come off worse.

Caught by a stray thumb to the eye by Siebert as he protested the call, the 29-year-old clutched his face theatrically, almost as if the accidental contact might win his side a free-kick.

Siebert, in fairness, didn't seem the slightest bit concerned, likely having already grown tired of both team's antics. The official simply ran upfield and gestured for the game to continue, only glancing back momentarily to check on Kondogbia.

Watch: Referee pokes Atletico Madrid's Geoffrey Kondogbia in the eye v Man City

Following the anarchy that unfolded in the tunnel after the match between Savic and City's Jack Grealish, UEFA chiefs will be taking a close look into the events of Wednesday's match. Somehow, though, we doubt Kondogbia's eye poke will be high on the agenda.

Footage of the accidental coming together was uploaded to Reddit on Thursday and fans couldn't get enough of it.

"THERE'S MORE? That game had so much drama, I can't keep up," read a first comment.

Another agreed: "There'll be clips popping till the weekend... WE NEED DRAMA."

"Never before has a scoreless draw produced so many highlights," chimed in a third user, while a fourth insisted: "I need a compilation of these videos."

Can you name these UEFA Champions League final stadiums?

A further reply likened the absurd scene to something you would have seen in WWE years ago, joking: "This like WWE when Triple H would referee The Rock v Stone Cold and sneak a low blow."

"Seems like an argument for not crowding the referee," reasoned a final user.

It's tough to disagree there.
