From Carling champagne to the Barclays match ball all the way back to the more-traditional trophy, the prize awarded to the Man of the Match in Premier League matches has taken various forms over the years.

None, though, have been particularly outlandish.

The same can’t be said for other competitions around the world, however, with recipients seeing their individual achievements marked in truly unique ways.

Whether it’s as recognition for a Man of the Match performance, Player of the Month consistency or any other accolade that rewards impressive form, some of these bizarre awards genuinely have us scratching our heads.

Here a some of the weirdest examples we've found across the globe.

A full crate of beer

Champagne might have been binned as a Man of the Match prize in the Premier League, but alcohol is still handed out in other countries - and in quite substantial quantities, too.

The Zimbabwean Premier League, sponsored by Castle Lager, has been known to mark Man of the Match performances by gifting a full crate of beers.

Hardly, the most suitable prize for a professional athlete. Surely, a four-pack (at most) would have done the job.

A gigantic credit card

As much as we've no doubt that Kaiser Chiefs midfielder appreciated the 2,000 South African Rand that he received from sponsors ABSA bank as a Man of the Match reward in April 2014, we're still not clear as to why the novelty credit card he was presented with had to be quite so large.

Getting this thing home would be a challenge in itself - and paying for anything via contactless would be at least a two-person job!

A PlayStation Game

During his final season at Brentford, West Ham's Said Benrahma produced a solo masterclass to knock Fulham out of the Carabao Cup. On this occasion, the Man of the Match nod did net him a small trophy.

However, he was also rather randomly presented with a copy of Crash Bandicoot for the PlayStation 4. The confused look on his face says it all.

There's no console in sight, so we're guessing he was responsible for sorting one himself if he actually wanted to play the game!

A live chicken

This entry from Malawi wasn't so much a full-blown Man of the Match award as it was a token of recognition from local fans.

That said, there's no getting away from how truly strange it is.

It's customary for supporters of Nyassa Big Bullets to provide rewards as motivation to their players. In July 2019, when striker Hassan Kajoke starred in a 5-0 win for the club, he was selected to receive a live chicken.

Even as a player from the region, Kajoke doesn't seem to fully know what to make of it all.

Flip Flops

A prize is a prize, but the only time we reckon a pair of flip flops should be an acceptable Man of the Match award is after the final game heading into a summer break.

Ghanaian Premier League side Dreams FC, though, chose - through their sponsors -to regularly recognise outstanding performances by handing out pairs of the notoriously flimsy footwear.

From the image below, they don't seem particularly top of the range - and the recipient looks like he'd rather be anywhere else than at the presentation.

A Burger King paper crown

Undoubtedly the cheapest item featured on this list, Argentina international Franco Armani was presented with one of the fast food giants paper crowns by TV producers after his sensational performance for River Plate against Danubio in March 2018.

As part of sponsorship commitments, Armani had little option but to conduct his post-match interview wearing the crown - looking pretty ridiculous in the process.

A mountain bike

Aberdeen's Stephen Glass was in tremendous form during the 1995 Scottish League Cup final, producing an energetic performance to see his side past Dundee.

After such a draining afternoon, the last thing on his mind was probably cycling.

Enter sponsors Coca Cola, who promptly presented the winger with a mountain bike, predictably emblasioned with the brand's iconic logo on its back wheel.

At that exact moment, champagne or even a can of Coke would have likely been greeted with far more enthusiasm.

5GB of mobile data

Hlompho Kekana of South African side Mamelodi Sundowns went viral in 2018 after being awarded 5GB of mobile data by league sponsors for a Man of the Match display.

In a region where high-speed broadband can often come at a premium, such a prize could well come in handy.

However, it's not the sort of thing you can stick on your mantlepiece and reminisce over at the end of your career!

A fresh fish

For reasons that we've never quite been able to figure out, current Arsenal playmaker Martin Odegaard received a large fresh fish after being awarded Real Sociedad's Player of the Month award in August 2019.

At 16 years old - and banking a considerable weekly salary, he could have been forgiven for having the same confused look on his face as many others on this list.

To his credit, though, despite the randomness of it all, he beams as he's presented with his prize. A truly bizarre scenario.

Sometimes just sticking with the tried and trusted trophy is best for all concerned.
