On April 16th, 2014, Gareth Bale scored one of the greatest cup final goals in history. At Valencia's Mestalla stadium, the Welshman destroyed poor ol' Marc Bartra to secure a memorable Copa del Rey victory for Real Madrid over Barcelona.Bale's sprint to get past the Spanish centre-back saw him actually leave the field of play and the speed he displayed in front of watching eyes around the world still leaves us open-mouthed.

Bale morphed into prime Usain Bolt for a brief period of time and Bartra just had no answer to his supreme athleticism.

Bartra really went from hero to zero in the 2014 Copa del Rey final. Seventeen minutes before Bale blew him away, the Spanish centre-back cancelled out Angel Di Maria's first half opener with a well-placed header from a corner.

But sadly, no one remembers anything about that goal these days.

During the first lockdown in 2020, Bartra opened up about his humiliation at the hands of Bale in a chat with Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas on Instagram Live.

"I went from hero to s**t in 15 minutes," the Real Betis defender admitted, per AS. "I scored the first goal and I was thinking this is going to be one of my best games. It was f*****g tough! He was so fast."

Vicente del Bosque, who was in charge of the Spain national team at the time, was present at the stadium and Barta feared the worst with regards to his international career as a result.

"I was annoyed because they told me Del Bosque was in the stands and I had a goal of making the national team," Bartra continued. "It was hard to take. After what Bale did to me, I thought to myself, 'that's the end of my going with Spain.'"

Bartra also revealed in the chat that referee Mateu Lahoz gave him some words of encouragement after Bale's goal.

He added: "I remember that Mateu Lahoz came over to me to pick me up a bit and told me to keep going and that was really good for me. I couldn't believe it."

Bartra remained a Barcelona player for two more seasons after the 2014 Copa del Rey final and then joined Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2016.

The 31-year-old returned to Spain in 2018 with Real Betis and thankfully, Bale hasn't subjected him to more punishment in the years since.
