Jamie Carragher & Micah Richards' hilarious reactions to Raheem Sterling's miss v Lyon

Manchester City reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the second consecutive season.

The Citizens booked their place in the final four with a hard-fought battle against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

City held Diego Simeone’s side to a 0-0 draw, which meant they won 1-0 on aggregate thanks to Kevin De Bruyne‘s goal at the Etihad Stadium.

The Premier League champions were drawn with Atletico’s fierce rivals Real Madrid in the semis and the first leg, which City won 4-3 last Tuesday, was an absolute belter.

City are now favourites to progress to the final, but Los Blancos and the in-form Karim Benzema will not make it easy form them in the Bernabeu.

The last time Pep Guardiola‘s side failed to make the Champions League semi-finals was in 2019/20, when Lyon pulled off a huge upset by beating them 3-1 in the quarters.

A brace from Moussa Dembele and a goal from Maxwel Cornet secured the unlikeliest of victories for the French side in Lisbon.

Things could have been so different that evening, though.

Shortly after Lyon moved 2-1 ahead in the 79th-minute through Dembele’s first goal, Raheem Sterling was presented with the simplest of chances to equalise.

A cross was fizzed into the England international and all he had to do was tap the ball into the back of the net from around six yards out.

But Sterling got his contact all wrong and inexplicably sent the ball over the crossbar, which sent Guardiola falling to his knees.

No one watching could believe what they’d just seen and the reactions from Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards in the CBS Sports studio summed up the moment perfectly.

And Carragher & Richards’ legendary reactions to it…

Carragher’s face and Gary Neville-esque noise were both iconic, while Richards went through every footballing emotion possible in the space of around five seconds.

A legendary piece of Champions League coverage.

City were made to pay just six minutes after Sterling’s howler when an uncharacteristic error from Ederson gifted Dembele a second goal to put Lyon 3-1 up.

City had no time to claw their way back into the match and Lyon booked their place in the semi-finals of the competition, where they lost to eventual winners Bayern Munich.
