However, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Bannan's strike to make it 3-0 on the half-hour mark should have counted as two, three or even four goals such was the lucrative nature of it.

With Bailey Peacock-Farrell having lumped a long pass forward for the visitors, the ball fell into the path of Bannan after the MK Dons back-line made an average attempt at a clearance.

And with the Sheffield Wednesday star having noticed that home goalkeeper Jamie Cumming was stood off his line, he saw his name up in lights and decided to go for the spectacular.

Barry Bannan's outrageous goal

As such, the 32-year-old chose to wind up a 40-yard strike with his revered left foot to catch out the MK Dons shot-stopper as he scrambled back towards his goal line.

The result? One of the best goals you'll see in English football all season, so be sure to check out the scintillating moment that Bannan thought: 'Av it,' and found the back of the net down below:

Pick that out. Goodness me.

A goal of the season contender

You'd forgive the Dons for having wanted to throw in the towel as soon as that hit the net because you know your luck's out when the opposition are pulling off goal of the season contenders.

While it's obviously not crazy enough to even flirt with a Puskas Award nomination, there's no denying that there will be fewer better goals than that scored in English football this season.

Nevertheless, it didn't completely take the wind out of the hosts' sails as Tottenham Hotspur loanee Troy Parrott found the net in the 40th minute to offer a glimmer of hope.

Former Premier League favourite

But regardless of the final score, Premier League fans will find it hard not to crack a smile at the sight of Bannan producing the type of scintillating goal that he always threatened to deliver in the top-flight.

The Owls talisman might be past his prime years now, but he can most certainly reflect happily on a career that has seen him play for Derby County, Crystal Palace and Leeds United amongst others.

He also amassed 27 caps for Scotland between 2010 and 2017.
