Gianluigi Donnarumma's bizarre attempt to waste time leads to strangest yellow card of season

Gianluigi Donnarumma received one of the strangest yellow cards of the 2021-22 season during Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 win over Marseille on Sunday evening.

The Italian goalkeeper was booked for time-wasting in the second minute of stoppage time by referee Francois Letexier following a moment of bizarre decision making.

Donnarumma came out of his penalty area, Manuel Neuer style, to prevent a Marseille attack. He considered his options and proceeded to kick the ball out of play rather than down the pitch.

Instead of booting the ball into the stands, however, Donnarumma inexplicably kicked the ball into the advertising hoardings.

The ball rebounded back to the Italy international, who panicked.

The 23-year-old ended up dribbling the ball back down the touchline to prevent PSG taking a quick throw-in.

Letexier blew his whistle and showed Donnarumma a yellow card for wasting time.

Donnarumma’s mistake allowed Marseille to equalise

Donnarumma, who burst onto the scene with AC Milan, has experienced a mixed debut season in Ligue 1 following his free transfer to the Parc des Princes.

Euro 2020’s Player of the Tournament made the mistake which led to Duje Caleta-Car equalising for Marseille against PSG on Sunday night.

Neymar had opened the scoring in the 12th minute but Donnarumma’s mistake from a corner allowed the visitors to level the scores.

However, PSG managed to seal their 23rd league victory of the campaign thanks to Kylian Mbappe’s penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Ligue 1 leaders now find themselves 15 points clear of second-placed Marseille with six fixtures remaining and will almost certainly become champions of France before the end of April.

What did Pochettino say after PSG 2-1 Marseille?

Despite that, Pochettino voiced his disappointment that PSG’s fans weren’t more behind the team at the Parc des Princes.

“We are still waiting for the supporters to be able to expend the energy to support us,” the Argentine coach said in his post-match press conference, per Yahoo.

“They show their disappointment – and as I always say, there is freedom of expression, it is their way of expressing themselves, and we have to respect it. But we would like to always have the support of the supporters.

“Winning a 10th title in the history of the club is not trivial, and we would like to [enjoy the] experience with them.”
