Rangers will see it as a 'big disappointment' if they fail to keep the Scottish Premiership trophy at Ibrox and miss out on clinching back-to-back titles, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The Gers have entered the final weeks of the campaign and although they remain in the hunt to be crowned champions, they are not in pole position.

What's the latest news involving Rangers?

Rangers are currently six points adrift of table-topping arch-rivals Celtic as they look to enjoy domestic glory.

The Gers have not led the way since a 3-0 defeat at the hands of their cross-city neighbours in February, while a 2-1 loss at Ibrox allowed Celtic to put further daylight between the Glasgow giants.

Although Rangers gained some revenge for those setbacks by booking their place in the Scottish Cup final thanks to an extra-time win over the Hoops, that has not had an impact on the points tally.

The Gers were crowned the Scottish Premiership champions for the first time in a decade last season, with them finishing the domestic campaign unbeaten and racking up 102 points.

However, there was a major change earlier this term when Steven Gerrard opted to walk away from Ibrox in favour of taking charge of Premier League side Aston Villa.

He was replaced in the dugout by former Light Blues ace Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who highlighted the fact he had inherited a squad which was in a 'great position on all fronts'.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about the situation?

O'Rourke believes the Rangers hierarchy will be underwhelmed by van Bronckhorst's impact if he fails to guide them to the Scottish Premiership title.

The journalist feels the Dutchman will not meet expectations if the Gers are unable to leapfrog Celtic in the standings.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "Obviously, it would be a big disappointment because they thought van Bronckhorst would just go in there and continue the work that Steven Gerrard had done there at Rangers. He had transformed things and got Rangers back on top.

"Van Bronckhorst came in with Rangers in a good position in the league and many people expected them to go on and win it again this year."

How have Rangers performed under van Bronckhorst?

Rangers have only suffered four defeats over the course of van Bronckhorst's 32 matches at the helm, with them emerging triumphant 22 times.

The Gers have made an impact on the continental stage, with them booking their place in the Europa League semi-finals, where they are set to face Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig, thanks to overcoming Braga last week.

Van Bronckhorst could still add to the five pieces of silverware he won while at Feyenoord, thanks to progression in Europe and the Scottish Cup, but the Scottish Premiership crown may prove to be out of reach.
