Everton could look to welcome Leicester City central defender Jannik Vestergaard to Goodison Park if they succeed in their bid to avoid the drop, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

The Toffees are currently embroiled in a relegation dogfight and sit just three points clear of the Premier League's bottom three, meaning they are in serious danger of falling into the Championship.

What's the latest news involving Vestergaard?

According to Football Insider, Vestergaard is firmly on the radar of Everton's new director of football Kevin Thelwell, who is plotting a move ahead of the transfer window reopening for business.

The report suggests the 33-cap Denmark international was watched by a senior Toffees scout while representing his country in a 3-0 win over Serbia during last month's international break.

Succeeding in welcoming Vestergaard to Merseyside would result in the 6 ft 6 colossus moving onto pastures new for a second time in less than 12 months.

That is because the centre-half only swapped Southampton for Leicester City after a £15million deal was struck last August.

Leicester will not necessarily be in a rush to sell Vestergaard as his £75,000-per-week contract still has more than two years to run, so the Foxes will be in a strong negotiating position if Everton look to test their resolve.

What has Paul Brown said about Vestergaard?

Brown insists it would not come as a shock if Everton boss Frank Lampard were to target Vestergaard ahead of next season.

However, the journalist warns a move to Goodison Park could only be possible if the Toffees maintain their Premier League status.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: "In that position, I wouldn't be surprised if something like that might happen.

"But it's very difficult to see who they could possibly target right now without knowing where they're going to be."

Why is Vestergaard of interest to Everton?

Only Leeds United, Norwich City, Watford and Newcastle United have conceded more Premier League goals than Everton this season, so it is clear that they have been weak at the back.

In fact, since Lampard's January appointment, the Toffees' backline has been breached three or more times on four occasions.

Vestergaard could help to make Everton more difficult to break down as he boasts plenty of experience in the English top flight having appeared in the competition 82 times.

Although the 29-year-old's job is primarily to keep the ball out of the back of the net, he has proven that he can be a threat from set pieces by registering 21 goals over the course of his senior club career.
