Celtic are 'desperate' to tie Tom Rogic down to a new contract and boss Ange Postecoglou will be 'pushing' the Parkhead hierarchy to reach an agreement with the attacking midfielder, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Rogic headed to the Scottish Premiership title-chasers more than nine years ago, after a £400,000 move from Australian side Central Coast Mariners was completed, but there are question marks over where his long-term future lies.

What's the latest news involving Rogic?

Rogic is set to enter the final 12 months of his £16,000-per-week contract on May 31, leading to uncertainty over whether he will still be on Celtic's books beyond a decade.

However, former Scotland international right-back Alan Hutton has claimed Rogic may have already held initial talks over a new deal.

It comes after Postecoglou insisted, in February, that entering contract negotiations with the Australian was the 'last thing' on his mind.

Despite uncertainty over his long-term future, Rogic has still been handed 45 appearances this season and repaid the faith shown in him by Postecoglou by chalking up 16 goal involvements.

His creativity in the final third played a key role in Celtic winning the Scottish League Cup last December, with Rogic claiming an assist in the final, and has also enabled his current employers to open up a six-point cushion at the top of the Scottish Premiership standings.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Rogic?

O'Rourke believes Postecoglou, who was appointed as Celtic's boss last summer, will be urging those at boardroom level to reach an agreement over a new contract with Rogic.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "I think Celtic will be desperate to try to sit down and sort out his long-term future.

"They'll want to keep him there because I think he's got that little something extra that Celtic had been missing over the last 12 months.

"He's been a big factor in their success and trying to win the title this year. If Postecoglou has got anything to do with it, he'll be pushing Celtic to ensure they keep hold of Tom Rogic."

Why would Celtic be desperate to keep Rogic at the club?

Rogic has racked up 46 goals and 49 assists in 267 outings for Celtic, underlining how productive he has been since leaving his homeland.

While he is approaching a decade at Parkhead, the 29-year-old has remained a regular starter under numerous Bhoys bosses - including Brendan Rodgers, Neil Lennon and Ronny Deila - emphasising that he has stood the test of time.

The 53-cap Australia international clearly has a huge admirer in Postecoglou, who recently described Rogic as 'outstanding'.
