Atletico Madrid midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia is an "unbelievable player" for Aston Villa to be looking at, says journalist Dean Jones.

The 29-year-old is currently being linked with a move to Villa Park, and Jones thinks that shows how far the Midlands club have come.

What is the latest news involving Kondogbia?

According to Birmingham Live, Villa are interested in signing Kondogbia this summer as manager Steven Gerrard looks to improve his options in the middle of the park.

The same report states that the Villans boss actually went to scout the Central African Republic international himself when Atletico took on Manchester City in the Champions League last week.

In recent weeks, Villa have been heavily linked with Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips and Brighton's Yves Bissouma. The Telegraph recently reported that the Premier League outfit were targeting both players ahead of the summer transfer window.

However, it now looks like 6 ft 2 Kondogbia could become their priority following Gerrard's rumoured scouting mission.

What has Jones said about Kondogbia to Villa?

Jones thinks it is unbelievable that Villa are now looking at midfielders like Kondogbia, feeling that a year ago they would not have been able to get a No.6 better than Douglas Luiz.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: "Kondogbia's an unbelievable player to be looking at. The promising thing for Aston Villa right now is that a year ago you wouldn't think that you could get a player any better than Douglas Luiz, and now you're thinking actually, 'Yes, we can.'

"So I think that's a sign of the times. There's definitely life beyond this current team."

Would Kondogbia be a good signing for Villa?

Yes. In fact, as Jones put it, he would probably be an "unbelievable" addition to Gerrard's side.

At 29, the former France international has a lot of experience playing for some top teams, including Atletico, Inter Milan and Valencia.

In terms of his style, Kondogbia would be a really combative figure for Villa, which seems to be what Gerrard is looking for when you consider the midfielders that the Villans have been linked with.

This season, no Atletico player has averaged more tackles per league game than the former Valencia man, who is currently making 2.7 (via WhoScored).

If Villa can bring him in for the 2022/23 campaign, then it is good business. Ultimately, be it Kondogbia, Phillips or Bissouma, Gerrard should get his hands on a new midfielder this summer.
