The ‘Minneapolis Miracle’ still lives on to this day as one of not only the greatest catches in NFL history, but also one of the craziest finishes too.

The pass from the Minnesota Vikings' Case Keenum to Stefon Diggs against the New Orleans Saints was a play that you would really only see in Hollywood films, but became even more incredible when you saw it played out in real life, such was the sheer awe of what had happened and how impossible it looked before the play started.

And whilst both men have gone on to have careers away from US Bank Stadium, with Keenum bouncing around the league primarily as a backup whilst Diggs this offseason penned a multi-year £104m deal with the Buffalo Bills, both men are set to be entwined for all eternity as a result of their incredible play.

What was on the line?

The game took place during the divisional round of the 2018 NFL Playoffs, with both teams fighting for the right to take on the Philadelphia Eagles the following week in the NFC Championship game and a trip to the Super Bowl.

The game, and the playoffs as a whole meant an awful lot to the Vikings, as they could have become the first team in NFL history to play the big game in their home stadium, a feat that has since been achieved by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Los Angeles Rams in the past two seasons.

The Vikings and the Saints had just come through more than 59 minutes of incredible football that had seen the Vikings storm out to a 17-0 lead at halftime only for the Saints to come roaring back and eventually take the lead.

The Vikings would regain that lead, only for the Saints to take it back with 25 seconds to go.

The impossible becomes reality

Having managed to get to their own 39-yard line and with just 10 seconds left on the clock, the plan appeared to be for Keenum to throw the ball to the sideline for Diggs to step out of bounds and put themselves in position to kick a field goal to win the game.

However, when Diggs grabbed the ball, Saints defender Marcus Williams in an attempt to tackle the reciever, ended up aiming far too low allowing Diggs to readjust his body and land inches from the sideline. With nobody around him, he then belted towards the end zone before starting off one of the most raucous celebrations that US Bank, or indeed any stadium is likely to see for quite some time.

The madness was not over yet. Even though the game was over with the Saints having no chance to win, NFL rules at the time still dictated that the extra point play had to be completed to round off proceedings, which led to the very bizarre incident of a few Saints players having to trudge back onto the field to go through the formalities, even though most of them had gone back into the locker room.

But once the extra point was confirmed, the players each went their separate ways, and back to their respective locker rooms knowing that they had just taken part in a moment that will live in NFL folklore for generations to come.
