Wolverhampton Wanderers stand a good chance of attracting Matheus Nunes to Molineux because of the amount of Portuguese stars already on the West Midlands club's books, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Wolves have enjoyed a positive first season under the tutelage of Bruno Lage, who was appointed as the Premier League side's head coach last summer, but he could look to freshen up his squad when the transfer window reopens for business.

What's the latest news involving Nunes?

According to The Athletic, Sporting ace Nunes has been added to Lage's shortlist of targets after setting his sights on acquiring two central midfielders.

The report suggests Lage has informed chairman Jeff Shi and the recruitment team of the profile of players he wants to bring to the club, with Nunes fitting the bill.

Nunes clearly has plenty of talent and even gained high praise from Pep Guardiola as the Manchester City boss claimed the 23-year-old is 'one of the best players in the world today'.

According to Portuguese media outlet A Bola, via the Manchester Evening News, Guardiola's admiration may hamper Wolves' hopes of luring Nunes to Molineux.

That is because it is understood that Nunes is eager to secure a switch to the Etihad Stadium rather than heading to Wolves.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Nunes?

O'Rourke believes the fact that Wolves currently have a host of Portuguese stars on their books could be enough to persuade Nunes to join them in the West Midlands.

However, the journalist warns it will be difficult for Lage to win the race for the five-cap Portugal international's services.

When asked whether his nationality would play a pivotal role in Wolves' pursuit of Nunes, O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "It would obviously enhance their chances of signing someone like Nunes from Sporting.

"He is a very highly-rated midfielder who has seen some top clubs linked with him."

How has Nunes performed so far this season?

Despite question marks over whether Nunes' long-term future lies in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, he has still been a regular starter in the heart of Sporting's midfield.

The £27million-rated star has also shown that he can be a threat in the final third of the pitch by chalking up three goals and five assists since the campaign got underway.

Being a key member of his current employers' side has allowed him to close in on a century of Sporting appearances.
