Liverpool fans ‘planning Cristiano Ronaldo gesture at Anfield’ after tragic death of baby son

Liverpool supporters are reportedly planning to hold a minute’s applause for Cristiano Ronaldo after the Manchester United forward and his partner, Georgina Rodriguez, announced the tragic death of one of their newborn twins on Monday.

Writing on social media, the couple said they are “devastated” at the loss of their son and described it as “the greatest pain that any parents can feel”.

“It is with deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away,” said the message on Monday evening. “It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel.

“Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.”

The message continued: “We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support.

“We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time.

“Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.”

Cristiano Ronaldo will not feature against Liverpool

Man United have confirmed that Ronaldo will not feature during Tuesday night’s Premier League clash against rivals Liverpool.

“Family is more important than everything and Ronaldo is supporting his loved ones at this immensely difficult time,” a statement from United read. “As such, we can confirm that he will not feature in the match against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening and we underline the family’s request for privacy.

“Cristiano, we are all thinking of you and sending strength to the family.”

A host of high-profile football clubs, including Liverpool, and players from around the world have sent messages of support and condolence to Ronaldo and his family.

And The Mirror are reporting that those inside Anfield are set to mark the seventh minute – corresponding with Ronaldo’s iconic shirt number – by applauding.

A post from a Liverpool fan Facebook page reportedly read: “If you are lucky enough to be attending the game tomorrow evening, then please show a mark of respect to Cristiano Ronaldo and his family by taking part in the round of applause which will be held on the seventh minute.

“Rivalries should be set aside in heartbreaking circumstances such as these. You’ll Never Walk Alone, CR7 Jr.”

One fan on Twitter wrote: “If you are attending like myself please applause on the 7th minute to show respect to Cristiano Ronaldo and is family through this heartbreaking time.”

This would be a brilliant gesture if it happens; one that’ll hopefully unite both sets of supporters at the same time.

Football pales into insignificance at times like this and we hope Ronaldo and his family are doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances.
